When the Western Pacific High Commission was transferred from Suva to Honiara in 1952, the minute papers and general correspondence files covered by this list were transferred from the WPHC to the Pitcairn and Tonga Office which had been established to take over the administration of British relations with Pitcairn and Tonga from the WPHC. Although Tonga has been a constitutional monarchy since 1875, under treaties of friendship of 1879 and 1900 the kingdom ceded control of its foreign affairs to Great Britain represented by the British Agent and Consul who reported to the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific.
